Houston, TX — November 6, 2025 — A significant new phase in the civic and cultural fabric of the United States has commenced today with the opening of the Ismaili Centre Houston, marking the first of its kind in America and the seventh globally. Under the leadership of His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V, the Centre symbolizes opportunities for dialogue, diversity, and community engagement.
A Space Built for Connection and Reflection
Occupying a significant 11-acre parcel along the scenic Allen Parkway in Houston, the Ismaili Centre encompasses around 150,000 square feet, making it the largest facility among all Ismaili Centres worldwide. This venue is crafted not just as a sanctuary for the Ismaili Muslim community to pray, but as a cultural, educational, and civic hub that welcomes individuals from various backgrounds.
A Harmony of Architecture and Spirit
The architectural vision by Farshid Moussavi and landscape designer Thomas Woltz showcases a harmonious blend of heritage and modernity. The Centre comprises several courtyards, gardens, shaded walkways, and reflective water features, taking cues from traditional Islamic geometric patterns and Persian landscaping. Light streams gently through intricately designed façades, fostering an environment of peace, reflection, and warmth.
The architectural plan integrates both sacred and communal spaces: a prayer hall, areas for cultural exhibitions, classrooms, social spaces, and a central garden that invites people from all walks of life to enter.
A Bridge Between Communities
The Ismaili Centre Houston joins existing Centres in cities such as London, Vancouver, Lisbon, Dubai, Dushanbe, and Toronto. Each of these serves as a venue where civic leaders, artists, scholars, teachers, interfaith groups, and neighbours unite. Activities undertaken here include lectures, musical events, art displays, health and wellness workshops, and public dialogues. Houston, already renowned for its diversity, is now positioned as a vital site where pluralism is not merely acknowledged but actively embraced.
A Legacy of Service and Civilizational Ethics
The Centre embodies the values upheld by the Ismaili Imamat for over a century, which include:
⦁ The pursuit of knowledge
⦁ Compassion for all of humanity

Respect for every individual
⦁ Finding a balance between faith and reason
These core beliefs continue the legacy of institutions established under the leadership of His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, such as:
⦁ Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN)
⦁ Aga Khan University (AKU)
⦁ Aga Khan Health Services and Education Services
⦁ Aga Khan Museum and Cultural Trust
Global Contribution and Humanitarian Impact
With operations in over 30 countries, AKDN is engaged in various sectors, including education, healthcare, rural development, women’s empowerment, and cultural conservation. Key initiatives feature:
⦁ Universities and medical training hospitals in Pakistan, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Afghanistan
⦁ Microfinance and entrepreneurship networks supporting small businesses across Asia and Africa
⦁ Restoration of historic heritage, including mosques, fortresses, and cultural parks in Cairo, Delhi, Zanzibar, and Kabul
⦁ Humanitarian response and disaster resilience programs operating in partnership with the United Nations and regional governments.
These efforts are rooted in the belief that faith is fully lived when it inspires service to humanity.
A Community Embedded in American Civic Life
For many years, Ismaili Muslims in North America have made significant contributions in areas like medicine, engineering, education, business, public service, and charitable activities. Young Ismailis consistently engage in various volunteer initiatives, including environmental conservation, blood donation events, and emergency response efforts in cities across the United States and Canada. The Ismaili Centre Houston will enhance these activities by acting as a communal facility for all inhabitants, extending beyond just the Ismaili community.
A Beacon for the Future
Fundamentally, the Ismaili Centre Houston serves as a place for education, conversation, and collective humanity. It encourages us to create communities where individuals acknowledge their shared dignity, where learning is fostered, and where kindness is demonstrated through meaningful actions.
It welcomes each guest, regardless of their cultural background, faith, or identity, to contemplate a fundamental reality:
“We are strongest when we build together”.
In the years ahead, the Ismaili Centre Houston is anticipated to organize global conferences, institutes for youth leadership, programs for cultural diplomacy, partnerships in academia, and interfaith discussions, establishing itself as an exemplar of how communities can address the obstacles of the 21st century through conversation rather than conflict, understanding instead of confusion, and collaboration in place of seclusion.
By offering an environment where intellectuals, creatives, researchers, community leaders, and residents can unite, the Centre aims to nurture the upcoming cohort of individuals who can critically analyze, lead with integrity, serve with empathy, and act morally for the benefit of all. Through this initiative, the Centre will uphold the enduring ethos of the Imamat: that genuine advancement for humanity is achieved when faith motivates service and learning is embraced as a collective Endeavor.
