South Asians United of Fort Bend hosted an important civic and political forum Tuesday evening at Mai Colachi in Sugar Land, bringing together elected officials, judges, community leaders, candidates, civic activists and members of Fort Bend County\u2019s growing South Asian community.<\/p>\n
The well attended event drew a packed audience and provided a timely platform for discussion about political representation, redistricting, public safety, voter participation and the issues likely to affect the South Asian community in the coming years.<\/p>\n
The event was organized by Farha Ahmed, Afsheen Bhemani and Sofia Shaikh, along with other members of the organizing team. Qaiser \u201cQ\u201d Imam and Lakshmi served as emcees and skillfully guided the evening\u2019s discussions and presentations.<\/p>\n
A major focus of the program was the growing political significance of the Asian American community, particularly South Asians, in Fort Bend County. Presentations highlighted the community\u2019s expanding population and emphasized that demographic growth can translate into political influence only when accompanied by voter registration, turnout and sustained civic engagement.<\/p>\n
An informative presentation on redistricting was delivered by Dr. Mark P. Jones focusing on the political and demographic landscape of Texas and Fort Bend County. They discussed the potential consequences of future redistricting and what possible mid decade redistricting of Texas House and Senate districts in 2027 could mean for a rapidly growing and increasingly diverse county.<\/p>\n
Particular attention was given to how changes in district boundaries could affect the political representation and voting strength of Asian American and other minority communities in Fort Bend County.<\/p>\n
The presentation was followed by a lively panel discussion and question and answer session featuring Judge Surendran Pattel, Judge Juli Mathew and Judge Sonia Rash. A representative of State Representative Dr. Suleman Lalani, who is currently attending the legislative session, also participated.<\/p>\n
Panelists first responded to prepared questions covering community concerns, political participation, public safety, diversity and leadership. Audience members were later invited to ask questions directly, producing a thoughtful and engaging exchange between elected officials and the community.<\/p>\n
Judge Pattel noted that South Asians have become considerably more civically and politically engaged since 2018, but emphasized that the community\u2019s growing numbers will matter only if people consistently exercise their right to vote.<\/p>\n
Judge Mathew spoke about the judicial system, community safety and the importance of diversity. She emphasized that Fort Bend County is home to people from many countries, cultures and minority communities and that public institutions must continue serving that diversity effectively.<\/p>\n
Judge Rash stressed that trust within the South Asian community cannot be built simply by appearing at election time. Meaningful relationships, she said, require year round engagement, listening to families and communities, and consistently working on issues that affect their safety and quality of life.<\/p>\n
She also addressed diversity in political participation, observing that representation matters and that political institutions should create space for people from different backgrounds to become involved.<\/p>\n
Dr. Lalani\u2019s representative discussed programs designed to create career and leadership opportunities for young people. The broader message from Lalani\u2019s office was that lawmakers need to hear directly about the problems facing their communities so that those concerns can ultimately be translated into effective legislation.<\/p>\n
Informational material available at the event also addressed issues including voting rights, immigration, education, healthcare, religious freedom, civic participation and the potential impact of competing political platforms on South Asian families.<\/p>\n
The gathering came at an important moment, with the November elections approaching and Fort Bend County continuing to emerge as one of Texas\u2019 most diverse and politically competitive counties. The presence of numerous elected officials, judges, candidates and prominent community leaders reflected the increasingly significant role South Asians are playing in the county\u2019s civic and political life.<\/p>\n
More than simply an election season gathering, the event became a substantive conversation about the future of South Asian political representation, the power of the vote, redistricting, emerging leadership and the need for year round civic engagement.<\/p>\n
Its central message was clear: a growing population creates potential, but sustained participation is what turns that potential into representation and influence.<\/p>\n
