LONDON, September 8, 2026:<\/strong> Britain has announced a ban on goods produced in Israeli settlements in the West Bank<\/strong>, coordinating the move with France and Canada as international pressure on Israel continues to grow.<\/p>\n

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband<\/strong> told the House of Commons on Tuesday that the UK could no longer simply speak out about suffering and injustice but needed to take action against the expansion of Israeli settlements.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we refuse to be bystanders to further suffering and to the destruction of the two-state solution,\u201d Miliband said, reaffirming Britain’s support for the establishment of two states.<\/p>\n

The UK ban on Israeli settlement goods<\/strong> comes amid increasing diplomatic tensions between Israel and several Western countries over settlement expansion and Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.<\/p>\n

UK ban on Israeli settlement goods targets West Bank settlements<\/h2>\n

Miliband said Britain’s position remains that Israel’s occupation of the West Bank is unlawful. He also said London believes Palestinians are facing ethnic cleansing in parts of the occupied territory.<\/p>\n

The government said the measures were intended to oppose settlement expansion and protect prospects for a future Palestinian state.<\/p>\n

However, the immediate economic impact of the UK ban on Israeli settlement goods<\/strong> is expected to be limited. Britain and Israel conduct around \u00a36 billion ($8.12 billion) in annual bilateral trade<\/strong>, while goods originating from Israeli settlements account for only a small portion of overall trade.<\/p>\n

The practical implementation of the ban could also prove complicated because authorities will need to distinguish products made inside Israeli settlements from those produced elsewhere in Israel.<\/p>\n

The announcement prompted a strong response from senior Israeli officials.<\/p>\n

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich<\/strong> called for Britain’s ambassador to Israel to be expelled, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir<\/strong> urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to close the British Consulate in East Jerusalem, which is accredited to the Palestinian Authority.<\/p>\n

Israeli President Isaac Herzog<\/strong> also accused Britain of interfering in Israel’s domestic political affairs ahead of elections expected in late October.<\/p>\n

The Israeli government has not immediately issued a detailed response to the specific trade measures.<\/p>\n

A major concern behind the latest diplomatic pressure is Israel’s E1 settlement project<\/strong>, located in the West Bank near Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

Palestinians have long argued that development in the E1 area could divide the West Bank and make the creation of a geographically viable Palestinian state more difficult.<\/p>\n

Miliband said the project poses a serious threat to the two-state solution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Smotrich also announced that plans for around 1,000 new homes<\/strong> in two other West Bank settlements were moving forward.<\/p>\n

The United Nations, Palestinian authorities and most countries consider Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank illegal under international law. Israel rejects that legal interpretation.<\/p>\n

Britain’s decision follows a broader series of measures by Western governments.<\/p>\n

Miliband said the UK, France and Canada<\/strong> were joining the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Spain and Norway in either banning settlement goods or preparing similar restrictions.<\/p>\n

Britain recognised a Palestinian state in 2025<\/strong>, describing the decision as part of efforts to advance a two-state solution. In June, London also imposed sanctions on Israeli networks accused of financing, enabling or carrying out violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.<\/p>\n

Relations between Britain and Israel have become increasingly strained as London has criticised Israel’s conduct in Gaza, settlement expansion and attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians.<\/p>\n

The United States has also criticised the latest British measures.<\/p>\n

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee<\/strong> told the BBC that the restrictions amounted to discrimination against Jewish people. He also warned that the measures could affect British companies’ ability to conduct business in some US states that restrict government contracts or public investment involving companies that boycott Israel.<\/p>\n

The UK government has defended its position, arguing that action against settlement expansion is necessary to preserve the possibility of a negotiated two-state solution.<\/p>\n

Goods produced in Israeli settlements are largely agricultural products, including fresh produce and wine<\/strong>, and represent only a small share of Israel’s overall exports.<\/p>\n

The latest move therefore has limited direct economic consequences but carries significant diplomatic and political importance<\/strong> as Britain, France and Canada increase pressure on Israel over settlement expansion and the future of the Palestinian territories.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
