The Race Itself Was the Easy Part<\/b><\/h3>\n

Fariba Hashimi crossed second in the women’s road race at the Asian Games near Nagoya<\/a>, Japan, on the Shinshiro Cycling Road Course. On paper, that’s a clean line \u2014 start, finish, silver. In practice, almost nothing about her path there has been clean.<\/span><\/p>\n

She raced without a mechanic. One person from the Afghan federation came along, and his job was driving the car. Compare that to the support teams other national squads bring, and the gap becomes obvious. She still finished second.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Training as a Disguise<\/b><\/h3>\n

Hashimi started cycling as a teenager, training disguised as a man alongside her sister Yulduz. It’s worth sitting with that for a second \u2014 not “faced obstacles,” but had to physically hide who she was to ride a bicycle in public.<\/span><\/p>\n

She’s talked about being attacked with stones during that period. That’s the actual cost of entry into a sport most of the world treats as recreational.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaving, Not by Choice<\/b><\/h3>\n

Hashimi is from Faryab province and left Afghanistan after the Taliban’s 2021 return to power, helped out by former Italian champion Alessandra Cappellotto. She’s based in Italy now. So is her sister. Neither left because Italy offered a better climate for cycling \u2014 they left because staying meant the end of their careers, full stop.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2021, Taliban authorities have layered on restrictions covering women’s education and public life, sport included. There’s no ambiguity in that policy. Women’s competitive sport inside Afghanistan, in any organized sense, doesn’t currently exist.<\/span><\/p>\n

What She Said, and What She Didn’t Have To<\/b><\/h3>\n

Her comments after the race weren’t polished PR lines. “They took away our freedom, they took away everything from us” isn’t a quote built for a highlight reel. It’s a flat statement of fact from someone describing her own life.<\/span><\/p>\n

She followed it with something less bitter: that the medal shows the resilience of Afghan women, and that she knows millions of women elsewhere share the same dream. She said she hopes the next generation gets to compete representing their country without fear.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

She’s already looking at Los Angeles 2028, saying she doesn’t want to stop and hopes to be back on a stage like this one again. Given what it took to get here once, that’s not a small ambition.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bigger Picture<\/b><\/h3>\n

One medal doesn’t undo years of restriction. It doesn’t reopen a single gym or school for girls inside Afghanistan. What it does is put a name and a face on something that’s easy to reduce to a policy headline \u2014 that there are Afghan women still competing<\/a>, still training, just doing it from thousands of miles away, under a flag from a country that currently won’t let them ride a bike at home.<\/span><\/p>\n

That contradiction is the real story here, more than the result itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/b> Yes, and increasingly they compete from outside the country. Afghan athletes, especially women, now typically train and live abroad \u2014 in places like Italy, Australia, or the US \u2014 while still representing Afghanistan at international events. This shift accelerated sharply after 2021, when the Taliban’s restrictions made organized women’s sport inside the country effectively impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/b> Cricket holds that title by a wide margin today, driven by the national men’s team’s rise in international competition over the last 15\u201320 years.
