LONDON:<\/strong> Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has questioned the long-term future of the United Kingdom, referring to growing debates over constitutional change and independence movements in parts of the country.<\/p>\nSpeaking at a youth conference, Lavrov said he was uncertain about what would happen to the country known as Great Britain, pointing to discussions among what he described as Celtic nations about possible independence referendums.<\/p>\n
His remarks come amid renewed debate in the UK over the relationship between Westminster and the devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n
Devolution Debate Intensifies<\/h3>\n
The comments followed a recent declaration by the first ministers of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in which they argued that Westminster should not have the power to prevent democratic decisions concerning their constitutional futures.<\/p>\n
The issue has drawn responses from political parties across the UK.<\/p>\n
Plaid Cymru said Wales’ constitutional future should be determined by the people of Wales, arguing that it was not an issue for the Kremlin to support, oppose or use for its own purposes.<\/p>\n

During the same conference, Lavrov also raised concerns about what he described as excessive Western influence within the United Nations Security Council.<\/p>\n
