Party chairman Barrister Gohar Khan and the PTI parliamentary committee rejected the decision and called it an unconstitutional attack on provincial autonomy and the public mandate. Any change in how the province handles security can therefore affect border management and regional stability.

The political effect may be just as large. This is the first time in years that governor rule in Pakistan has replaced an elected provincial government. A legal challenge from the PTI could also reach the courts in the coming days. Both steps will shape how long the federal arrangement stays in place.

For residents, the immediate questions are practical. People want to know when roads will reopen, when schools will resume and when the postponed matric exams will be held. Authorities are expected to announce updates as the security review continues.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is governor rule in Pakistan?

Governor rule in Pakistan is a constitutional arrangement under which the federal government takes control of a province when the provincial government cannot function according to the Constitution. It is based on Article 234. The president can proclaim it after a governor reports that the province cannot be governed properly, or if the president is otherwise satisfied that this is the case.

Once it is in force, the provincial cabinet stops holding office and the governor runs the province on behalf of the president. The powers of the provincial assembly are exercised by Parliament or under its authority. Because it overrides an elected government, it is seen as a last resort and usually draws strong political debate. The measure has been used in several provinces since 1947.

What is the difference between a governor and a chief minister in Pakistan?

The chief minister is an elected political leader. He or she is chosen by the members of the provincial assembly and heads the provincial cabinet. The chief minister makes the daily decisions on policing, health, education and development, and is answerable to the assembly.

The governor is a constitutional head of the province and is not elected by voters. The president appoints the governor, and the post is largely ceremonial in normal times. The governor acts mainly on the advice of the provincial cabinet. The picture changes under governor rule, when the governor takes over the executive functions of the province and works under the direction of the federal government.

What is the role of a governor in Pakistan?

In normal times, the governor represents the federal government in the province. The governor appoints the chief minister after the assembly vote, and also swears in ministers. The governor also summons the provincial assembly and signs bills into law, along with other formal duties. Most of these powers are used on the advice of the chief minister and the cabinet.

The role becomes far more powerful when governor rule or an emergency is in force. The governor can then run the administration, oversee security arrangements and issue directions to officials.
