The creation of Pakistan was a historic achievement, but independence was only the beginning of a much longer national journey. The more important question today is what Pakistan has done with the freedom it inherited and what kind of country it will become by 2047, when it completes 100 years as an independent nation.<\/p>\n On August 9, 1965, Singapore emerged as an independent state under extremely difficult circumstances. The country faced limited resources, unemployment, racial tensions, economic uncertainty and serious concerns about its survival. Singapore’s founding leader, Lee Kuan Yew, became emotional while addressing journalists after the separation from Malaysia. His reaction reflected a powerful reality: declaring independence is one thing, but transforming independence into a successful and stable nation is an entirely different challenge.<\/p>\n Creating a country is an event; building a nation is a continuous process<\/strong>. Pakistan’s experience since 1947 demonstrates just how difficult that process can be.<\/p>\n Pakistan’s birth in 1947 was surrounded by enormous challenges. Millions of people migrated across newly created borders, families were separated, communities were uprooted, and countless people lost their homes, businesses and loved ones. The new country had limited financial resources, an incomplete administrative structure and the enormous responsibility of establishing a functioning state.<\/p>\n Yet amid all these difficulties, the people possessed something more powerful than material wealth: hope<\/strong>. They had a dream of building a country where future generations could live with dignity, freedom and opportunity.<\/p>\n Seventy-nine years later, Pakistan possesses almost everything that was missing in 1947. The country has a Constitution, Parliament, courts, universities, industries, a professional armed forces structure, nuclear capability, a large young population and millions of talented Pakistanis living around the world.<\/p>\n Yet these achievements should lead us toward an uncomfortable but necessary question: Do we still possess the shared national dream that inspired the generation of 1947?<\/strong><\/p>\n Freedom should not be understood merely as the absence of foreign rule. There are different stages of national freedom. The first is freedom of the land, through which a nation becomes politically independent and gains the right to determine its own future. Pakistan achieved this freedom in 1947.<\/p>\n The second is freedom of institutions<\/strong>, where the rule of law becomes stronger than individual influence, public institutions function according to established principles, and national decisions are made according to the interests of the country rather than the interests of individuals or powerful groups.<\/p>\n There is also a third form of freedom, perhaps the most difficult of all: freedom of the mind<\/strong>. A mature nation eventually learns to look into the mirror. Instead of blaming every failure on foreign powers, conspiracies, former rulers or political opponents, it begins to examine its own decisions. It acknowledges mistakes, learns from failures, changes priorities and accepts responsibility for its future.<\/p>\n Pakistan achieved political independence in 1947, but the question remains: How far have we travelled toward institutional and intellectual independence?<\/strong><\/p>\n In 79 years, Pakistan has changed governments many times, but governance has changed far less. The country has experienced different political leaders, parties and systems, yet many structural problems have remained.<\/p>\n Governments change, ministers change, policies change and priorities change. At times, the country has debated whether the parliamentary system is responsible for its problems. At other times, attention has shifted toward presidential models, new provinces or powerful personalities. Political movements have frequently promised transformation through a new leader or a new political force.<\/p>\n But perhaps the problem has never been simply about faces.<\/p>\n In a weak system, even a good person can struggle to deliver lasting change. In a strong system, ordinary people can produce extraordinary results because institutions provide continuity, accountability and direction.<\/p>\n Successful nations do not wait for extraordinary rulers to solve every problem. They build institutions that allow ordinary leaders and public servants to perform effectively.<\/p>\n When a country repeatedly searches for a savior during every crisis, it may be a sign that its institutions are not yet strong enough.<\/p>\n One of the tragedies of Pakistan’s political history is that almost every new government seems to believe that history begins with it. A new government arrives with new priorities. A new minister introduces a new policy. A new official brings a new direction. A new crisis creates another national debate.<\/p>\n The state continues to function, but the country does not always move forward at the same speed.<\/p>\n National development requires continuity, and continuity requires long-term national priorities that survive changes in government.<\/p>\n Pakistan’s education policies change. Economic strategies change. Accountability standards change. Foreign policy priorities can change with political circumstances. Sometimes even the interpretation of national history becomes influenced by the people currently in power.<\/p>\n A state can continue operating under such conditions for a long time, but sustained national progress becomes much more difficult.<\/p>\n The country needs policies that are bigger than political terms and national goals that survive changes in leadership.<\/p>\n The experiences of countries such as South Korea, Singapore and Japan<\/strong> offer important lessons, even though their political, economic and historical circumstances are very different from Pakistan’s.<\/p>\n South Korea transformed itself from a country devastated by war and poverty into a major industrial and technological economy by focusing on education, manufacturing, exports and technology. Singapore built its strength around human capital, administrative competence, global trade, infrastructure and institutional discipline. Japan, after the devastation of war, concentrated on rebuilding its economy, developing industries and investing heavily in technological advancement.<\/p>\n These countries cannot simply be copied, and Pakistan must develop solutions according to its own circumstances. However, they share an important lesson: successful nations define their priorities and pursue them consistently<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Development does not happen by accident. Countries that make sustained progress generally have a clear national direction and maintain it across political transitions.<\/p>\n Pakistan’s greatest challenge may not be poverty alone, debt alone or corruption alone. One of its fundamental weaknesses is the lack of continuity.<\/p>\n Yet Pakistan possesses enormous potential. It has a young population, a strategically important geographic position, agricultural resources, a large domestic market, entrepreneurial talent and a growing technology sector.<\/p>\n Millions of successful Pakistanis around the world demonstrate the ability of Pakistani people to compete internationally.<\/p>\n The country does not suffer from a shortage of talent.<\/p>\n The greater question is whether Pakistan can create an environment in which that talent can flourish at home.<\/strong><\/p>\n Pakistan will celebrate its 100th Independence Day in 2047<\/strong>. Twenty-one years may appear to be a long period, but in the life of a nation it is remarkably short.<\/p>\n A child entering school today could be an adult professional by the time Pakistan celebrates its centenary. The decisions being made today will determine the country that generation inherits.<\/p>\n What kind of Pakistan will exist in 2047?<\/p>\n Will the national debate still revolve around who holds real power? Will citizens still question whether everyone is equally subject to the law? Will talented young people continue to leave Pakistan in search of better education and career opportunities?<\/p>\n Or will Pakistan become a country where young people dream not about leaving their homeland but about building their future within it?<\/p>\n Imagine a Pakistan in 2047 where justice is delivered according to law rather than influence, where institutions remain stronger than personalities, and where a change of government does not change the fundamental direction of the state.<\/p>\n Imagine education being treated not as an expense but as a strategic investment. Imagine research, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship becoming major drivers of economic growth.<\/p>\n Pakistan could become known internationally for more than its strategic geography, security concerns or nuclear capability. It could be recognized for its universities, technology companies, research institutions, exports, innovation and human capital.<\/p>\n Its young population could become one of its greatest economic strengths rather than simply a demographic statistic.<\/p>\n This dream is ambitious, but it is not impossible. Pakistan has the resources, talent and potential required to move toward a stronger future. What is needed is a clear national direction and the political and institutional consistency to pursue it.<\/p>\n The Pakistan of 2047 will not suddenly appear on the country’s centenary. It is being built today.<\/strong><\/p>\n It is being built in classrooms, courts, Parliament, universities, businesses and public institutions. It is being shaped by the quality of education children receive, the fairness of justice, the strength of institutions, the decisions made by policymakers and the opportunities available to young people.<\/p>\n Most importantly, the future of Pakistan is being shaped by the way its people think about responsibility.<\/p>\n A nation cannot build a better future if it constantly refuses to examine its own mistakes. Progress requires the courage to acknowledge weaknesses, learn from experience and make difficult reforms.<\/p>\n August 14 should always remain a day of celebration. The green and white flag should be raised with pride. The story of independence should be told to children. The sacrifices of those who left their homes, businesses and possessions, and those who lost their lives during the struggle and migration, should never be forgotten.<\/p>\n But Independence Day should also provide moments of silence and reflection.<\/p>\n Because freedom is not merely an inheritance. Freedom is also a responsibility.<\/strong><\/p>\n The generation of 1947 gave Pakistan its independence. Every generation that followed inherited the responsibility to protect, strengthen and develop the country.<\/p>\n Now that responsibility belongs to us.<\/p>\n The most meaningful question of Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day may not be what happened in 1947, because that history is already written.<\/p>\n The more important question is what we want to write between now and 2047.<\/p>\n Where do we want Pakistan to stand when it celebrates 100 years of independence?
