RICHMOND, Texas: An ongoing legal dispute over the office of Fort Bend County Judge is now affecting critical decisions involving the county budget and property tax rate.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, the Fort Bend County Commissioners Court moved forward with the proposed property tax rate. However, Democratic Commissioners Dexter McCoy and Grady Prestage were once again absent from the meeting.<\/p>\n
County Judge Daniel Wong and Republican Commissioners Andy Meyers and Vincent Morales were present.<\/p>\n
McCoy and Prestage have not attended Commissioners Court meetings since June. Their primary objection centers on whether Wong has the legal authority to continue serving as County Judge.<\/p>\n
What Is Behind the Dispute?<\/p>\n
The controversy began after former County Judge KP George was suspended following his criminal conviction, which led to Daniel Wong\u2019s temporary appointment.<\/p>\n
The Fort Bend County Attorney has maintained that Wong\u2019s temporary appointment ended on June 17 after the civil case underlying his appointment was dismissed. Wong and his attorneys disagree with that legal interpretation.<\/p>\n
On August 6, District Judge Edward Krenek ruled that Wong could remain in office while the legal dispute continues. However, the underlying legal question has not yet been fully resolved.<\/p>\n
Democratic Commissioners Continue Boycott<\/p>\n
Commissioner Dexter McCoy has said that, based on the County Attorney\u2019s legal opinion, Wong does not have the authority to conduct county business. McCoy therefore maintains that he will not participate in Commissioners Court meetings under the current circumstances.<\/p>\n
Commissioner Grady Prestage has also raised concerns that decisions and votes taken while Wong presides over the court could potentially face legal challenges in the future.<\/p>\n
Both commissioners have suggested that Wong recuse himself from budget and tax rate votes, allowing all four elected commissioners to participate in these critical decisions.<\/p>\n
Why Does the Tax Rate Matter?<\/p>\n
The current standoff is no longer limited to a political or legal disagreement. It could have direct consequences for the county budget, employees and major development projects.<\/p>\n
Under Texas law, the presence of four members of Commissioners Court and the required procedures are necessary for approval of the county tax rate. The county\u2019s annual budget is also closely tied to that tax rate.<\/p>\n
County officials have warned that failure to approve the tax rate on time could delay Cost of Living adjustments for county employees as well as important infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n
Thursday\u2019s proceedings moved the proposed tax rate forward, while final action on the tax rate and budget is expected on September 10.<\/p>\n
September 10 Emerges as a Critical Date<\/p>\n
McCoy has said that if Wong continues to preside over Commissioners Court, he and Prestage will not return.<\/p>\n
Wong, meanwhile, has made clear that he intends to participate in the important September meeting. According to his spokesperson, Wong considers himself the current interim County Judge and intends to continue carrying out the responsibilities of that office.<\/p>\n
The next meeting of the Fort Bend County Commissioners Court is scheduled for August 27, while September 10 is expected to be particularly significant for final approval of the county budget and property tax rate.<\/p>\n
What began as a legal disagreement over the authority of the County Judge now appears to be developing into a broader administrative and financial standoff.<\/p>\n
The coming weeks could determine whether the parties find a mutually acceptable path forward or whether the dispute further affects Fort Bend County\u2019s budget, tax decisions and government operations.<\/p>\n
