But what kind of generation are we preparing today to celebrate it?

Abdul Rehman Patel

August 14, 2047.

Pakistan will have completed one hundred years of independence.

Islamabad will be illuminated. Green and white flags will flutter across Karachi. Lahore’s landmarks will glow with lights. The national anthem will echo across the country, and with immense pride we will say:

Pakistan is one hundred years old.

But step away from that scene for a moment and return to August 2026.

A child is born in Pakistan today.

When Pakistan celebrates the centenary of its independence, that child will be twenty-one years old.

Another child, five or six years old, is carrying a schoolbag and walking through a school gate for the first time.

By 2047, that child will be twenty-six or twenty-seven. His or her education may be complete. The child will have entered professional life and perhaps be working in an office, courtroom, hospital, university, business, or government institution, participating in decisions that shape Pakistan.

And then there is a third child.

There is no schoolbag on this child’s shoulder.

This child is not going to school.

Perhaps he is working in a workshop, helping his father in a field, carrying goods at a shop, selling something on the street, or simply sitting at home because his parents cannot afford the cost of education.

In 2047, this child too will be a citizen in his twenties or thirties.

Together, these three children will become our Pakistan.

And this is where the real question begins:

What kind of Pakistan are we preparing to hand over to 2047?

Consider an interesting and thought-provoking observation.

When the United States erected its world-famous Statue of Liberty in New York, it placed the torch of liberty in one hand, but in the other, it placed a tablet representing law.

The symbolism is powerful. Freedom, dignity, and democracy cannot survive through power and slogans alone. They must also rest upon knowledge, thought, law, and constitutional values.

Now look at many of our own national monuments across Pakistan. We see stone, grandeur, swords, military imagery, and symbols of power, but the book and the pen rarely occupy the central place in our national symbolism.

Perhaps this is more than an artistic choice.

Perhaps it reflects something about our national priorities and how far we have allowed the book to drift from our collective dreams.

We often discuss Pakistan’s future in terms of the economy, defense, nuclear capability, motorways, ports, buildings, and mega projects.

But perhaps we are forgetting one fundamental truth:

The Pakistan of 2047 will not be built in 2047.

It is being built in classrooms today.

And, tragically, it is also being shaped outside those classrooms.

Millions of Pakistani children remain out of school. This is not merely an education statistic. It is a silent portrait of Pakistan’s future.

If a child does not attend school today, where will that child stand twenty-one years from now?

What kind of economy will that young person be able to participate in?

What skills will he possess when searching for employment?

How will he compete in a world transformed by Artificial Intelligence, robotics, automation, and technologies that are evolving faster than ever before?

Then comes an even more uncomfortable question.

For the children who are attending school, are we confident that they are receiving the education the world of 2047 will require?

Being inside a school and being educated are not necessarily the same thing.

If a child spends ten or twelve years in school but still cannot think independently, ask questions, solve problems, construct an argument, understand technology, or compete globally, then we must ask difficult questions of our educational system itself.

The world is changing rapidly.

In some classrooms around the world, children are not merely learning about Artificial Intelligence. They are already using it as part of the learning process. A new generation is growing up with coding, robotics, biotechnology, and technologies whose names barely existed in school curricula a few decades ago.

Meanwhile, in parts of Pakistan, the discussion is still about whether the teacher came to school.

Some schools have no proper roof.

Some have inadequate books.

And in some places, the child is missing altogether.

Pakistan’s competition, therefore, is no longer merely with India, China, Bangladesh, or any other country.

The Pakistani child is competing against time.

And time waits for no nation.

Yet there is another Pakistan too.

It is the Pakistan where a child attends an elite private school, uses modern technology, speaks fluent English, dreams of studying at the world’s best universities, and already has Artificial Intelligence integrated into everyday learning.

Just a few miles away, another child in the same country may not even have access to a basic textbook.

In 2047, both will carry the same Pakistani identity card.

Both will be Pakistanis.

But will they inherit the same Pakistan?

Perhaps our greatest national divide is not between provinces, languages, or political parties.

Perhaps one of the most dangerous divisions of the coming decades will be the division of opportunity.

One Pakistan will belong to children who are being prepared for the future.

The other will belong to children who have simply been abandoned to it.

We must decide whether we want to enter 2047 carrying these two Pakistans with us.

This responsibility does not belong solely to the government.

Certainly, the government bears the greatest responsibility because education is a fundamental responsibility of the state. Budgets, schools, teachers, curricula, and education policy ultimately require state leadership.

But the question also belongs to all of us.

To parents.

To teachers.

To businesses.

To charitable institutions.

To religious and social organizations.

And to us, the Overseas Pakistanis.

Every year, overseas Pakistanis send billions of dollars home. We build hospitals, donate ambulances, distribute food, finance water projects, support mosques, and stand beside our homeland whenever it faces hardship.

All of this is necessary.

But perhaps the time has come to direct a greater share of our community service toward an investment in Pakistan’s future.

Can one overseas Pakistani not take responsibility for educating one child?

Can one family not help improve one classroom in its ancestral village?

Can Pakistani doctors, engineers, teachers, scientists, and entrepreneurs living abroad not create online mentorship programs, scholarships, and technology initiatives for children in Pakistan?

Can our organizations not complement their annual dinners and celebrations with projects that bring one hundred, five hundred, or one thousand children back into school?

No individual has to set out to change all of Pakistan.

Sometimes, changing the future of one child is also a contribution toward changing Pakistan.

On August 14, we place a flag in a child’s hand.

Perhaps it is time to place a book in the other hand.

We teach our children to say Pakistan Zindabad.

Perhaps we must also ensure that they are capable of building a Pakistan where saying Pakistan Zindabad is not merely a slogan, but a source of genuine pride.

Because when nations decide what their children will learn today, they are actually deciding what their country will become twenty years from now.

We have only twenty-one years until 2047.

In the history of a nation, twenty-one years may not seem very long.

But in the life of a child, twenty-one years are everything.

In those twenty-one years, a child will be born, learn to walk, enter school, discover books, learn to question, reach university, acquire skills, and grow into the generation that will eventually take responsibility for the country.

Time is giving Pakistan twenty-one years.

And it is giving that child the same twenty-one years.

The question is simply:

What will each of them do with those twenty-one years?

Perhaps 2047 will not ask us how many enormous flags we displayed in 2026.

It may not ask how spectacular our Independence Day celebrations were.

It may ask only one question:

When you had twenty-one years, what did you do for us?

And the answer to that question will not be found in a speech.

It will be sitting on a broken desk in a government school.

It will be conducting an experiment in the laboratory of a good school.

It will be reading a book somewhere in a village.

It will be learning a lesson in a madrasa.

It will be holding tools in a workshop.

It will be working in a field.

And perhaps, somewhere, there will still be a child standing outside the school gate.

The Pakistan of 2047 is standing somewhere among these children today.

We must decide now whether we will bring that Pakistan inside the classroom

or leave it outside the gates of history.

Pakistan 2047 Is Standing at the School Gate Today Twenty-one years from now, we will celebrate Pakistan’s centenary.
