WASHINGTON:<\/strong> California State Senator Aisha Wahab has made history by winning a special election and becoming the first Afghan American elected to the United States Congress.<\/p>\n Wahab, a Democrat known for her progressive political views, defeated fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez in a closely contested race for California’s 14th Congressional District. Her victory came despite millions of dollars in outside spending aimed at influencing the outcome of the election.<\/p>\n The result was officially announced on Thursday, marking a significant milestone for Afghan Americans and the broader Muslim community in US politics.<\/p>\n Wahab entered the election as the clear favorite after finishing more than 25 percentage points ahead of Hernandez in the June primary.
