Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approves province-wide vehicle E-Tag, cyber crime unit, drone surveillance, and stricter security framework to strengthen law and order.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has granted in-principle approval to make e-tagging mandatory for all vehicles, including motorbikes, across the province in a bid to strengthen law and order and modernize the security framework. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting on law and order chaired by the Chief Minister, where several key security measures were approved. It was decided that an effective monitoring system would be established through e-tagging of vehicles and motorcycles. The Chief Minister also sought a comprehensive micro-security plan within seven days. The meeting approved the establishment of a Punjab Cyber Crime Investigation Unit, along with a special cell dedicated to assisting women and young girls who fall victim to cybercrime. Approval was also granted for the appointment of a head for the new unit and the setting up of District Online Crime Centers across the province.
Directing authorities to curb movement through unconventional provincial entry points, the Chief Minister ordered the installation of searchlights at key entry routes, enhanced drone surveillance, and rooftop security monitoring at check posts. She also directed immediate steps for the procurement of modern drone defense systems and strict enforcement against illegal drone usage.
The meeting emphasized continuing combing operations to identify criminals and terrorists. It also called for improved training and provision of modern security equipment to the RMP force established to manage crowd control. Participants agreed to formulate security SOPs for Youm-e-Ali (RA) after consultation with religious scholars.
The Chief Minister appreciated Provincial Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique and Lahore Police for effectively handling the prevailing situation. She also acknowledged the role of religious scholars in maintaining peace and expressed gratitude for their cooperation.
Speaking on the occasion, Maryam Nawaz Sharif said that eliminating terrorism requires unity and collective action. She termed the entry of a suicide attacker into Punjab through a checkpoint as alarming, stressing that no complacency can be afforded under current circumstances. “The nature of warfare has changed; we must prepare ourselves according to modern requirements,” she said, urging religious scholars to continue their support in maintaining law and order.
