Russia has officially recognized the Taliban government, becoming the first country to do so since their return to power in August 2021. Moscow accepted the credentials of Afghanistan’s new ambassador. Russia’s Foreign Ministry stated the move will enhance bilateral cooperation. Relations have gradually strengthened since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
