26 monuments inside Shahi Qila to be restored to their original condition. Principled decision to ban protest gatherings on Mall Road
An important meeting of the Lahore Heritage Areas Revival (LAHAR) was held under the chairmanship of Pakistan Muslim League (N) President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, where detailed progress on projects aimed at restoring ancient and historic buildings was reviewed.
The meeting agreed to fully restore all sections of Shahi Qila to their original historic condition. Spread over 40 acres, 26 monuments within the fort will be rehabilitated in their authentic form. A proposal to establish a new wing within the Tourism Department for the restoration and maintenance of historical buildings was also considered.
A principled decision was taken to impose a ban on all kinds of protest gatherings on Mall Road in order to preserve its historic beauty and maintain civic order.
It was agreed to restore Khark Singh Haveli and the old servant quarters and convert them into hotels to promote tourism. Approval was granted for the construction of a bridge to directly connect Jahangir’s Tomb to the main road, and a deadline has been set for its completion.
Furthermore, immediate measures were ordered to remove electricity and other overhead wires from the entire Walled City. A project to restore Rang Mahal School to its original historic appearance was also presented, while progress on the restoration and rehabilitation of the tombs of Noor Jahan and Asif Jah was reviewed.
The meeting also discussed the restoration and beautification projects from Tollinton Market to Lahori Gate and from Kachehri Chowk to Neela Gumbad. Reports were presented on the rehabilitation of Nasir Bagh Underground Parking, Railway Station Chowk, and Misri Shah.
The project to restore the outer facades of buildings from Shah Alam Market to Rang Mahal Chowk in a uniform historic design was also reviewed. Approval was granted for an attractive and aesthetically pleasing exterior design to restore the traditional and historical status of Pak Tea House.
A proposal to rehabilitate the cricket ground and wrestling arena at Minto Park was also considered.
The meeting reaffirmed its commitment to reviving Lahore’s historic identity with a renewed spirit, ensuring that the city’s ancient character is preserved while simultaneously promoting tourism and cultural activities.
