Srilankan Department of Meteorology says that an increase in rainfall is expected in several parts of the island starting today as the low-pressure depression area currently located over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified. Accordingly, an increased rainfall is expected in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces. Heavy showers of about 100mm are likely in parts of the Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as the Polonnaruwa, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya districts. Showers over 75mm are expected in parts of the Northern province and the Anuradhapura and Kandy districts. Meanwhile, The Department of Fisheries has taken measures to temporarily halt sailing in the deep and shallow sea areas from Kankesanthurai to Hambantota via Trincomalee and Pottuvil due to threats posed from severe weather for one day fishing trawlers and vessels engaged in shore fishing activities.
