Daughters of Siachen: Gilgit-Baltistan Students Win Gold and Silver Medal at American Mathematics Olympiad

(Publish from Houston Texas USA)

The isolated mountains cloaked in snow of Gilgit, Baltistan, for the most part, have become a new source of pride for the country. Two teenage girls from the remote Amirabad village of Chorbat Valley, Ghanche district, have put Pakistan on the world map by winning the gold and silver medals at an international math competition. Daughters of Siachen, this extraordinary accomplishment of Hira and Masuma, their untapped potential, is a clear signal from the most neglected areas of Pakistan.
Hira Farman and Masuma Ibrahim are the students of Quaid-e-Millat Public School (QMPS) in Amirabad, who have won at the top of the American Mathematics Olympiad (AMO) 2025. The AMO is a world-class competition that records thousands of entries from across the world every year.

Hira Farman, a Grade 7 student, won the International Gold Medal in a breathtaking display of mathematics mastery. Masuma Ibrahim, a Grade 5 student, won the International Silver Medal. Their achievement becomes even more remarkable when one considers the fact that their school is located in a remote border area of Ghanche district, also known as the door to Siachen, where there is a shortage of educational facilities.
The Quaid-e-Millat Public School has been a landmark of education in the area since its inception. It was founded by the community elder M.M.A. Hadi in 1999 with the motto ‘Enter to Learn, Leave to Lead’.
It was the school’s dedication to standout quality that, even in a rather challenging environment, led to the production of international champions.

As a direct result of their extraordinary achievement, both Hira and Masuma have secured their places for two more leading international competitions: the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) in Singapore and the UK Global Final Competition in London.
The announcement has triggered happiness and festivities among the inhabitants of the Ghanche district. The district officials, local community leaders, and other functionaries have readily acknowledged the students and the school staff.

Among the visitors who came to the school to congratulate the students and the staff were Deputy Commissioner Ghanche Areeb Ahmed Mukhtar and SSP Ghanche Muhammad Ayaz, as well as Deputy Director of Education Hamidullah Baqiri and Assistant Commissioner Chorbat Rustam Ali. The officials gave commendation certificates and cash awards to the students and school staff.

Community elders and public circles have considered this achievement as a milestone and a model of success, and have substantially evidenced the girls of Gilgit-Baltistan as extremely intellectually gifted. They expressed that if these young ladies receive some support and patronage, they will accomplish even greater international milestones.

The local community has made a heartfelt appeal to the Government of Pakistan, along with public and private institutions, to extend full support, patronage, and financial assistance to the Quaid-e-Millat Public School and the two gifted students. Such backing is a necessity for these brilliant young people from the far-off region to keep making their mark internationally and bring more glory to the country.

The achievements of Hira Farman and Masuma Ibrahim beautifully illustrate that talent is universal, and when you invest in education even in the remotest areas, you get world-class results.
