Gautam Gambhir’s Position as Head Coach Under Threat After India’s Consecutive Losses

Following a series of defeats, the position of Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under scrutiny. Gambhir took over as head coach in July last year, and since then, the Indian team has lost 6 out of 10 Test matches and an ODI series in Sri Lanka.

After a shocking whitewash in the home Test series against New Zealand and a 1-3 defeat in the series against Australia, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s international careers now hang in the balance. As a result, Gambhir’s position as head coach is also becoming increasingly unstable.

According to Indian media, if India does not perform well in the Champions Trophy, Gambhir’s performance as head coach will be reassessed.

While Gambhir’s contract with the BCCI is reportedly valid until the 2027 World Cup, his recent performance has raised concerns. BCCI sources, speaking anonymously, told the media that Gambhir has yet to deliver solid results. If India underperforms in the Champions Trophy, a closer evaluation of his tenure as head coach may lead to a decision on his future.

Sources also revealed that Gambhir aims to eliminate the longstanding “superstar culture” within the team, which has reportedly caused tension with some senior players. It is believed that Gambhir and some senior players are not on the same page regarding team culture.
