China’s Marriage Rate Plummets to Record Low Despite Government Efforts

The number of marriages in China fell by 20% in 2024, marking the sharpest decline on record, despite extensive government initiatives to encourage young couples to wed and have children. The drop reflects growing social and economic challenges, including high living costs, career pressures, and shifting attitudes toward marriage and family life.

Chinese authorities have introduced various incentives, such as financial subsidies and housing benefits, to counter declining birth rates and an aging population. However, the trend suggests deep-rooted societal changes that may continue to challenge population growth efforts in the coming years.
