OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has dismissed Elon Musk’s reported $97.4 billion bid to acquire the nonprofit entity controlling OpenAI, calling the offer “ridiculous.” Altman reaffirmed that OpenAI is not for sale, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to its mission and independence.
In a pointed response, Altman jokingly suggested that OpenAI could consider purchasing Twitter for $9.74 billion, referencing Musk’s ownership of the social media platform.
The rejection adds to the ongoing tensions between Altman and Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but parted ways in 2018 due to strategic disagreements. Since then, Musk has launched his own AI venture, xAI, further intensifying the competition.
OpenAI, originally founded as a nonprofit, has since transitioned to a “capped” for-profit model, allowing investment while limiting profits.
