Four Italian Divers Recovered from Deep Maldives Cave
Four Italian Divers Recovered from Deep Cave in Maldives
MALE: Specialist divers have recovered the bodies of four Italian scuba divers who died after entering a deep underwater cave in the Maldives, following several days of search operations.
The divers disappeared during a scuba diving expedition at a cave approximately 60 metres (197 feet) deep in Vaavu Atoll. The first victim was located shortly after the accident, while the remaining members of the group were found several days later.
A team of specialist Finnish and Maldivian divers took part in the difficult recovery operation inside the underwater cave.
Finnish diver Sami Paakkarinen, who was involved in the operation, said the four bodies were located together in one section of the cave. He described the area as extremely deep and challenging for divers.
Paakkarinen also commented on the equipment used by the victims, saying it was not optimal for the demanding conditions inside the cave.
Difficult Recovery Operation
The depth and confined environment of the underwater cave made the recovery particularly challenging. Specialist divers had to work in difficult conditions while searching through the submerged passageways.
Images taken from inside the cave by Paakkarinen provided a view of the area where the divers were discovered.
The incident has highlighted the risks associated with technical and cave diving, where depth, restricted passages and limited access can make underwater emergencies especially difficult to manage.
Authorities and specialist teams are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
