Millions of people across Europe looked to the skies on Wednesday as the Moon moved across the Sun, creating one of the continent’s most significant solar eclipses in decades.
Observers across much of the United Kingdom saw the Moon block more than 90% of the Sun’s surface — the largest coverage visible from the UK since 1999. Meanwhile, parts of Greenland, Iceland and Spain experienced a rare total solar eclipse.
As daylight faded, crowds gathered across Europe to witness the extraordinary celestial event. Some spectators cheered as the final rays of sunlight disappeared, while others watched the eclipse in silence.
Darkness During Total Eclipse
People located along the eclipse’s path of totality, where the Moon completely covered the Sun, experienced a brief period of darkness lasting less than two minutes.
The sudden change in light created an unusual atmosphere, with daytime skies becoming dramatically darker before sunlight gradually returned.
Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking some or all of the Sun from view.
The event attracted skywatchers, photographers and astronomy enthusiasts across Europe, many of whom gathered at open spaces to experience the rare phenomenon.
The eclipse also provided scientists and researchers with an opportunity to observe the Sun and its surrounding atmosphere.
