Flávio Bolsonaro Leaves Brazil for the United States After Election Defeat

Just days after a painful loss in Brazil’s presidential runoff, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro slipped out of the country and headed for the United States, ignoring a Supreme Court order to hand over his passports.

The sequence moved fast. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had just secured reelection. Corruption and money-laundering probes against Bolsonaro were tightening, and Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered him to surrender both his regular and diplomatic passports within 24 hours. Instead of complying, the right-wing lawmaker left Brazil. His passports were later canceled by federal police. Reports say he reached Florida, where the Trump administration had already signaled it would grant him and his family entry.

Lula called the departure a “shameful act,” arguing that an innocent person would stay and face the process rather than leave under cover of night. Critics see a familiar pattern: when pressure mounts, the Bolsonaro family looks for safer ground abroad. Supporters insist the investigations are political persecution.

With his Senate term ending soon and parliamentary protections fading, Bolsonaro’s sudden exit has left a deeply divided Brazil debating the same old questions—about justice, power, and whether political dynasties can still outrun accountability.
