A deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego has shocked communities across the United States after multiple people were killed in what authorities are investigating as a possible hate crime. The attack targeted the largest mosque in San Diego County and occurred shortly before midday prayers.

According to police, two teenage suspects opened fire outside the mosque, killing three adult men before later dying from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds a few blocks away from the scene. Investigators say the attackers were aged 17 and 18.

One of the victims was identified by community members as a mosque security guard who reportedly played a heroic role in preventing even greater loss of life. Officials praised his actions, saying he likely helped protect worshippers and children inside the Islamic center.

Authorities confirmed that no students or staff members inside the mosque’s school were physically harmed during the incident. Children and teachers were quickly placed into lockdown as police surrounded the area and secured the building.

Investigators are treating the shooting as a hate crime after anti-Islamic writings and hate-related messages were reportedly discovered inside the suspects’ vehicle and on weapons connected to the attack.

Police also revealed that the mother of one suspect had contacted authorities before the shooting, warning that her son was suicidal and may have taken firearms from home. Law enforcement officers were reportedly searching for the teens before the attack began.

The tragedy has sparked fear and sadness throughout Muslim communities nationwide, especially as it happened near an important Islamic religious period. Local leaders, civil rights groups, and political officials strongly condemned the violence and expressed solidarity with the victims’ families.

Security has since been increased at mosques and Islamic centers in several US cities while investigators continue examining the suspects’ backgrounds, possible motivations, and online activity.

The shooting has renewed national conversations about religious hate crimes, extremism, and the safety of places of worship across the United States.
