Germany Crowned World Champions as Pakistan’s Historic Hockey Record Is Equaled

By Asim Siddiqui

The FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium, provided another memorable chapter in international field hockey. I had the opportunity to travel from Washington, D.C. to the Netherlands as a media representative to cover the tournament, following the matches, players and atmosphere surrounding one of hockey’s biggest global events.

For Pakistan, the tournament was particularly significant as the national team returned to the Men’s Hockey World Cup after an eight-year absence. Pakistan eventually finished 11th, recording an encouraging 4–3 victory over Japan and scoring 17 goals in six matches. The campaign showed glimpses of the attacking hockey that once made Pakistan one of the most feared teams in the world.

The tournament ultimately belonged to Germany. In the final in Wavre, Belgium, Germany defeated Spain 1–0, with Michel Struthoff scoring the decisive goal in the 44th minute, allowing Germany to successfully defend their world title.

The victory carried enormous historical significance. Germany now have four Men’s Hockey World Cup titles — 2002, 2006, 2023 and 2026 — equaling Pakistan’s record of four championships won in 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994.

For decades, Pakistan stood alone as the most successful nation in Men’s World Cup history. Germany now shares that remarkable record.

Having covered the 2026 World Cup in the Netherlands, it was also a reminder of Pakistan hockey’s extraordinary legacy and the potential that still exists. Pakistan’s 11th-place finish may not represent the heights of the past, but the performances of several young players provide reason for optimism.

The challenge now is clear: Can Pakistan rebuild through merit, modern coaching, fitness, international exposure and continuity—and one day become the first nation to lift a fifth Hockey World Cup?
