Foundation Laid for Punjab’s First Wastewater Treatment Plant in Faisalabad

At the construction site of the Faisalabad Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase 1, a graceful inauguration ceremony was held where the Government of Punjab and Denmark formally launched this significant environmental and developmental project. Punjab Minister for Housing Bilal Yasin and Denmark’s Ambassador to Pakistan Maja Dyres Mortensen jointly laid the foundation stone of the plant, which will treat 33 million gallons of wastewater per day according to the standards of the World Health Organization and European countries. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs. 56 billion. Initially planned in 2017, the project is now being executed under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Under the supervision of the Punjab Housing Department, WASA Faisalabad will complete the project, while 3 megawatts of electricity will also be generated through biogas. The project is scheduled for completion in October 2028, and the consultant company will operate it until 2031. The initiative will create significant local employment opportunities, in addition to the ongoing development projects worth over Rs. 10 billion in Faisalabad. A further Rs. 12 billion in new projects has also been announced, while another major water treatment project of 30 million gallons per day will soon begin with the assistance of the French government. The wastewater treatment plant will play a crucial role in reducing environmental pollution, increasing the availability of clean water for agricultural use, and expanding WASA Punjab’s wastewater and surface water treatment facilities to other districts as well.
