Health authorities are investigating a growing HIV outbreak linked to Karachi’s Kulsum Bai Valika Hospital after two more girls tested positive, raising fresh concerns over infection control practices.
The number of children affected in the suspected HIV outbreak linked to Kulsum Bai Valika Hospital has continued to rise after two more girls tested positive, according to their families.
A father said his nine-year-old daughter was diagnosed with HIV after receiving treatment for a chest infection at the hospital. He added that his 12-year-old and three-year-old sons had also tested positive last month.
“All three of our children have tested positive for HIV,” the father said, claiming they had received treatment at Valika Hospital.
In a separate case, the parents of a three-year-old girl from Metroville said their daughter also tested positive for HIV after previously undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
More Than 100 Children Reportedly Affected
Earlier, Saeed Ghani confirmed that at least 78 children had contracted HIV at Kulsum Bai Valika Hospital, which operates under the Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution.
According to reports, more than 100 children from Pathan Colony have tested positive for HIV over the past nine months, prompting serious concerns about patient safety and infection prevention.
Inquiry Points to Reuse of Disposable Syringes
An inquiry report obtained by local media alleges that the outbreak may have been caused by the repeated use of disposable syringes on multiple patients.
The report states that a 10cc disposable syringe was allegedly reused on different newborns, potentially contributing to the spread of HIV among children receiving medical treatment.
Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine how the infections occurred and whether negligence was involved.
Large-Scale HIV Screening Planned
Following the outbreak, the federal government has decided to launch a large-scale HIV screening campaign in Pathan Colony.
According to official sources, the Sindh AIDS Control Programme will conduct HIV screening at both Valika Hospital and Pathan Colony.
The federal government will support the campaign by providing 50,000 HIV testing kits to assist health authorities in identifying additional cases and containing the outbreak.
