PATTAYA: Former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury moved a step closer to a long-awaited showdown with Anthony Joshua after defeating Poland’s Mariusz Wach by technical knockout in Thailand on Friday.
Fury dominated the heavyweight contest from the opening bell, forcing Wach’s corner to stop the fight in the seventh round after the British star repeatedly broke down his experienced opponent with sustained pressure.
Fury Secures Second Victory of 2026
The 37-year-old delivered another convincing performance in front of approximately 1,500 spectators at a venue in the Thai resort city of Pattaya.
The fight, which was not televised live, marked Fury’s second consecutive victory since returning from a 16-month break from professional boxing earlier this year.
Using his superior movement, accuracy and ring control, Fury gradually wore down the 46-year-old Polish veteran before the referee halted the contest after Wach’s corner threw in the towel.
Anthony Joshua Fight Back in Focus
Attention now shifts to Anthony Joshua, who is scheduled to face Albania’s Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.
A victory for Joshua would increase expectations for a long-awaited all-British heavyweight showdown between two of boxing’s biggest stars.
Fury, however, questioned whether Joshua would ultimately agree to the fight.
“I got through my test. Let’s see if he gets through his test,” Fury said after the victory.
He added that Joshua had previously failed to face him despite opportunities to do so.
“In Tottenham, in front of 70,000 people, he didn’t get in the ring with me. We’ll see if he finally does. I’m still not convinced.”
Fury Hopes Mega Fight Is Finalized Soon
Despite ongoing speculation, Fury dismissed reports that he would travel to Jeddah to confront Joshua after his fight or announce a future bout.
Instead, the former heavyweight champion said he planned to return home to spend time with his family.
“Hopefully the next big fight gets signed next week,” Fury said. “But for now, I’m going home to my wife and kids.”
Joshua Returns After Difficult Year
Joshua’s upcoming fight against Prenga will be his first professional appearance since surviving a tragic car accident in Nigeria in December that claimed the lives of two close friends.
The former two-time heavyweight champion is also seeking his first victory since suffering a knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois in their IBF heavyweight title fight at Wembley Stadium in September 2024.
A win over Prenga could finally pave the way for one of the most anticipated heavyweight fights in British boxing history.
