Pillar PAC Hosts Fort Bend County Candidate Forum, Candidates Discuss Key Local Issues

Democratic and Republican nominees face voters, outlining positions on financial transparency, taxes, public safety, economic development and community representation

Richmond, Texas — A. Rehman Patel

Ahead of the November elections, Pillar PAC hosted a Candidate Forum on Tuesday, August 18, at Kahwa Culture Yemeni Coffee in Richmond, giving Fort Bend County voters an opportunity to hear directly from Democratic and Republican candidates competing for two important county offices.

For Fort Bend County Treasurer, Democratic nominee Jeffrey L. Boney appeared alongside Republican nominee Bill Rickert. For Fort Bend County Precinct 4 Commissioner, Democratic nominee April L. Jones and Republican nominee Ken Mathews participated in the forum.

One of the strongest features of the event was its format. Rather than a traditional political rally, the evening was structured as a respectful and substantive conversation in which candidates were able to explain their priorities and positions on issues affecting Fort Bend County. Members of the audience were also invited to submit questions, giving voters an opportunity to hear candidates respond directly to community concerns.

The forum was moderated by Waleed Vohra and Shazib Iqbal. The discussion covered a broad range of issues, including county financial transparency, budgeting, public access to government information, economic development, community representation, the use of taxpayers’ dollars, law enforcement resources and public safety.

Democratic candidate for County Treasurer Jeffrey L. Boney emphasized financial transparency and improving public access to information about county finances. Drawing on his background in banking, budgeting and financial management, Boney said his professional experience could contribute to effective oversight of the county’s financial affairs.

Boney also proposed the concept of an advisory board representing different precincts and Fort Bend County’s diverse communities. He said such representation could help strengthen public awareness, communication and engagement between county government and residents.

Republican candidate Bill Rickert focused on the need to attract more businesses and investment to Fort Bend County. He stressed the importance of creating an economic environment that encourages businesses to establish and expand their operations within the county. Rickert also said communities should not be singled out and that all residents should be treated equally.

The discussion between the candidates for Precinct 4 Commissioner centered largely on public safety, taxpayers’ dollars, law enforcement resources and accountability of elected officials.

Democratic candidate April L. Jones said building bridges among Fort Bend County’s diverse communities and strengthening public safety would be among her priorities. She also emphasized the need for more advanced training for constables and other law enforcement personnel.

Jones said decisions by elected officials should be made with the interests of voters and the broader community in mind, while stressing that respect for the rule of law must remain a fundamental principle of public service.

Republican candidate Ken Mathews emphasized that Fort Bend County taxpayers’ money should provide the greatest possible benefit to Fort Bend residents. He advocated controlling unnecessary expenditures while ensuring adequate resources for the Sheriff’s Office, police and other public safety agencies.

Mathews also stressed accountability to voters and the importance of long term planning in decisions made by a county commissioner. He said all residents should be treated equally.

The forum drew Fort Bend County residents, community members and local civic and political figures. Candidates for other offices were also present, making the gathering a useful platform for broader civic and political engagement.

The Pillar PAC Candidate Forum was particularly significant because it brought Democratic and Republican candidates together in the same setting, allowing voters to hear competing perspectives and ask questions directly. Despite political differences, the discussion remained respectful, constructive and focused on issues affecting the community.

In local elections, voters may recognize candidates’ names without necessarily knowing enough about their priorities, policies or approach to governing. Forums such as this provide an important opportunity to move beyond campaign slogans, listen to candidates, ask questions and make a more informed choice at the ballot box.

That, perhaps, best reflected the message behind the forum’s theme:

“Listen. Ask. Decide.”

Listen first, ask questions, and then decide.
