Born in Karachi, Rising in America: Sen. Chris Van Hollen Electrifies Houston Pakistani Community with Bold Call for Economic Partnership

Houston, Texas — On the evening of September 12, 2026, Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen stood in a Houston living room and delivered a message that resonated deeply with the Pakistani-American community.
The private fundraising dinner, hosted by prominent attorney Nomi Husain at his home on 1 Ames Circle, brought together key community leaders including Rob Ammons, Mo Aziz, Abrahim Javed, Tahir Javed, Mustafa Tameez, and attorney Omar Khawaja. The event was organized to support Van Hollen for Senate.
Born in Karachi in 1959, Senator Van Hollen reminded the audience of his personal connection to Pakistan. He then turned to the future of U.S.-Pakistan relations with a clear and strong message.
“I would like to see a deeper economic relationship between the people of the United States and the people of Pakistan, businesses in the United States, businesses in Pakistan,” he said.
The senator recalled the Reconstruction Opportunity Zone bill he had pushed in Congress — legislation that would have given duty-free access to the American market for products from Pakistan’s underdeveloped regions. Although the bill was blocked, Van Hollen made it clear he remains ready to pursue new opportunities that create economic benefits for both countries.
For many in the room, the moment carried special meaning. A U.S. senator born in Karachi, standing among community leaders in Houston, speaking about shared opportunity, created a powerful connection between local civic engagement and national politics.
Host Nomi Husain, who has successfully organized dozens of fundraisers for lawmakers and judges over the years, was widely praised for once again providing a strong platform for the community’s voice.
The evening closed with calls for continued involvement — through voting, hosting, and supporting leaders who understand both American and global perspectives.
