U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack described the incident as an attack on the Israeli consulate and condemned the assault. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also condemned the violence.
Turkish authorities launched an investigation following the shooting. Police later detained 10 people in connection with the attack, according to reports.
The two wounded suspects were questioned while receiving medical treatment. Authorities also detained eight other people in Istanbul and nearby Kocaeli province.
Turkish officials said the attackers had links to a group that they described as exploiting religion, although authorities did not initially provide further details about the organization.
Officials had not publicly established a full motive at the time of the initial investigation. Authorities continued examining the suspects and their possible connections.
The incident added another security concern to an already tense diplomatic environment. It also came as protests and public demonstrations over the regional conflict took place in Istanbul.
