Matt Renshaw’s Career-Best 190 Puts Australia in Control Against South Africa
DURBAN: Matt Renshaw produced a remarkable career-best innings of 190 runs to put Australia in a strong position against South Africa in the first Test at Kingsmead on Saturday.
Australia were bowled out for 390 on the second day after Renshaw and Nathan Lyon combined for a record ninth-wicket partnership of 134 runs against South Africa in Durban. Their stand frustrated the home side and helped Australia recover from a difficult position.
Matt Renshaw 190 Rescues Australia
Australia resumed the second day at 187 for six, with Renshaw continuing his determined innings. The visitors had struggled on the opening day, slipping to 124 for six before the left-handed batter began rebuilding the innings.
Captain Pat Cummins contributed 43 runs and shared an important 86-run partnership with Renshaw for the seventh wicket. However, South Africa fought back when Wiaan Mulder dismissed Cummins, who was caught by Aiden Markram at second slip.
Mitchell Starc soon followed, bowled by Mulder for six, leaving Australia vulnerable once again.
Renshaw remained composed under pressure, rotating the strike effectively and taking advantage of loose deliveries. His patient approach allowed Australia to add valuable runs despite losing wickets at regular intervals.
Record Partnership at Kingsmead
Nathan Lyon supported Renshaw with 27 runs as the pair added 134 for the ninth wicket, establishing the highest partnership for that wicket by Australia against South Africa in Durban.
Lyon eventually fell leg before wicket to Marco Jansen, who finished with three wickets for 63 runs.
Renshaw’s innings ended shortly after tea when Aiden Markram caught him in the slips. He faced 395 deliveries and struck 190 runs, recording his highest Test score and the highest innings by a number-five batter at Kingsmead.
The innings marked Renshaw’s second Test century, coming nine years after his previous hundred of 185 against Pakistan in 2017. His performance was particularly significant after he had recorded single-digit scores in 11 of his previous 13 Test innings.
Although Australia were eventually dismissed for 390, Renshaw’s resilience gave the touring side a substantial total and shifted the momentum of the opening Test.
