AI Misuse and Online Safety: Opportunities and Risks
Artificial Intelligence Offers New Opportunities, but Misuse Raises Concerns
By Zafar Chishti
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most remarkable technological developments of the modern era, creating unprecedented opportunities in education, research, healthcare, communication, and numerous other fields. It has made information more accessible, improved learning opportunities, and enabled people to perform various tasks more efficiently. However, the growing misuse of this technology has raised serious concerns about privacy, human dignity, and personal security.
AI has become particularly beneficial for students and young people, who can use it to understand difficult subjects, improve language skills, develop creative abilities, and explore new areas of research. It also assists journalists, teachers, researchers, and other professionals in gathering information, organising ideas, and improving their work. When used responsibly, AI can become a valuable instrument for education, innovation, and social development.
Despite these advantages, the misuse of AI presents an alarming challenge. Some individuals exploit AI applications to create fake, obscene, or manipulated images of others without their consent. Such material may be used to harass, blackmail, defame, or intimidate innocent people. Women and young people are particularly vulnerable to these harmful practices, which can cause severe emotional distress and damage their personal and professional lives.
The creation and circulation of manipulated images is not merely a technological issue; it is a serious violation of privacy, dignity, and personal rights. In an age when digital content can be created and circulated within seconds, protecting individuals against online abuse has become an urgent responsibility.
Addressing AI Misuse in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the role of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) is particularly important in addressing cybercrime and investigating complaints involving digital harassment, online blackmail, and other unlawful activities. Law enforcement agencies must continue taking effective action against those who misuse modern technology to threaten or exploit others.
Complaints should be investigated promptly, evidence carefully examined, and legal proceedings conducted fairly and transparently.
Technology companies and AI developers also have an important responsibility to strengthen safeguards against abuse. They should improve content moderation systems, provide accessible complaint mechanisms, and take appropriate action against the misuse of their services. Cooperation between technology platforms and relevant authorities, in accordance with applicable laws and privacy protections, can help identify suspicious activities and support legitimate investigations.
Public Awareness and Digital Responsibility
Public awareness is equally essential. Parents, teachers, and educational institutions should educate young people about digital ethics, online safety, and the responsible use of AI. Citizens should never create or share humiliating content involving another person without consent.
Anyone affected by online blackmail or manipulated images should preserve relevant evidence, report the material to the platform concerned, and seek assistance from the appropriate authorities.
At the same time, AI should not be viewed only through the lens of its potential dangers. Its benefits for education, scientific research, healthcare, and professional development are substantial. Students can use it as a learning assistant, provided they continue to exercise independent judgement, verify information, and develop their own knowledge and skills.
I would like to congratulate the developers and professionals whose efforts have made AI an increasingly valuable source of knowledge and assistance. This technology has opened new avenues for learning, research, and creativity, particularly for young people who may otherwise have limited access to educational resources.
However, technological progress must go hand in hand with ethical responsibility, transparency, and respect for human rights. AI must remain a tool for education, innovation, and human welfare rather than an instrument of exploitation, harassment, or humiliation.
By strengthening legal safeguards, promoting public awareness, and encouraging responsible technological development, Pakistan and the international community can ensure that artificial intelligence serves humanity positively and creates a safer digital environment for future generations.
