WASHINGTON / MARYLAND: Political activity is intensifying across the United States ahead of the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, with early voting underway in Maryland and both major political parties accelerating their efforts to mobilize voters through community gatherings, grassroots meetings and public outreach initiatives.
As part of these activities, Democratic Congressman Johnny Olszewski Jr. attended a political gathering hosted at the residence of prominent Pakistani-American businessman and community leader Salman Bhatti in Maryland. The event provided an opportunity to discuss key national issues, the political landscape and the priorities shaping the upcoming congressional elections.
Speaking during the gathering, Congressman Olszewski criticized several policies of President Donald Trump’s administration, particularly those affecting healthcare, education, food assistance programs and economic security for working families.
He expressed concern over the potential consequences of Republican-backed policy decisions for vulnerable communities, arguing that access to affordable healthcare, quality education and essential social assistance must remain central priorities for the federal government.
The congressman emphasized that the Democratic Party remains committed to protecting public interests, strengthening economic opportunities and ensuring that government policies address the needs of ordinary Americans.

Discussing a proposed $5,000 financial payment attributed to President Trump, Olszewski questioned its fiscal feasibility, citing concerns about budgetary limitations and the availability of sufficient financial resources.
He maintained that any large-scale federal payment initiative would require a credible funding mechanism, responsible fiscal planning and appropriate legislative authorization. Without such arrangements, he suggested, the proposal’s implementation would remain uncertain.
Turning to the midterm elections, the Democratic congressman expressed confidence in his party’s electoral prospects, arguing that voters were increasingly focused on healthcare affordability, educational opportunities, economic stability and the protection of essential public services.
He said Democratic leadership would continue advocating policies aimed at improving living standards, supporting working families and addressing the economic challenges confronting American households.
Prominent Pakistani-American physician and community figure Dr. Sonia Rana also shared her views on the upcoming elections, expressing confidence that the Democratic Party would secure a strong electoral performance.
Dr. Rana emphasized the importance of public welfare, accessible healthcare, quality education and sustainable economic development in shaping America’s future.
She said she believed Democratic leadership could play a constructive role in addressing these challenges and promoting policies designed to improve opportunities and living conditions for communities across the country.
The gathering also highlighted the growing engagement of Pakistani-Americans in the United States’ political and civic landscape.
Host Salman Bhatti, a prominent Pakistani-American business and community figure, brought together participants for discussions on political developments, community concerns and the importance of civic participation.
The event reflected continued efforts to strengthen communication between elected representatives and local communities, particularly on issues affecting families, businesses and access to public services.
Maryland’s early voting period began on October 22 and continues through October 29, ahead of Election Day on November 3.
The midterm elections will determine control of the U.S. House of Representatives and contested Senate seats, alongside numerous state and local offices.
With the campaign entering its final phase, both Democrats and Republicans are seeking to consolidate support among voters concerned about the economy, healthcare, education, immigration and federal spending.
The outcome will have significant implications for the balance of power in Washington and the legislative direction of the remaining two years of President Donald Trump’s term.
