Greenland PM Rejects US Control, Calls for Independence Talks

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has expressed readiness to discuss with President-elect Donald Trump following his call for US control over the Arctic island. Egede emphasized Greenland’s aspiration for independence, stating, “We don’t want to be Danes or Americans.”

Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory with 57,000 residents, gained the right to vote for independence in 2009 but relies on Denmark for defense. The US, which operates a military base in northern Greenland, views the island as a key strategic asset. Trump described US control as an “absolute necessity” and warned of potential economic sanctions against Denmark if negotiations falter.

As Trump prepares to assume office on January 20, tensions over Greenland’s future continue to rise.
