Kathmandu: The Nepali Congress 15th General Convention opened in Kathmandu on Sunday, bringing together more than 7,500 delegates from Nepal and abroad.
Party President Gagan Kumar Thapa inaugurated the convention at Khula Manch in Tundikhel. The gathering will focus on the party’s political direction, organizational matters and the selection of new central leadership.
Nepali Congress 15th General Convention Begins
The convention is the party’s first regular national convention since December 2021. Delegates are taking part in closed sessions before voting begins later in the week.
Party officials said more than 7,700 delegates were expected to participate. The convention also includes representatives from different parts of Nepal and overseas organizations.
The gathering is being held under the theme of respecting tradition while committing to change. The party is also discussing organizational reforms and its future political direction.
Nepali Congress Leadership Election Set for October 7 and 8
The Nepali Congress leadership election is scheduled for October 7 and 8. Delegates will vote to select the party’s new central office-bearers.
The election follows closed sessions on October 5 and 6. During these sessions, party leaders are presenting political, organizational and financial reports. Delegates are also discussing proposed changes to the party’s statute and organizational structure.
Gagan Kumar Thapa, who currently leads the party, has also filed his candidacy for the presidency during the ongoing convention. The final voter list contains 7,114 confirmed representatives.
The convention comes at an important stage for the Nepali Congress. The party is seeking to shape its future leadership while addressing internal organizational differences.
The outcome of the October 7 and 8 vote will determine the party’s new central office-bearers and could influence its political direction in the coming period.
