STOCKHOLM: Scientists have developed a promising experimental drug that could represent a major breakthrough in the treatment of aggressive prostate cancer, with early laboratory studies showing it can slow tumor growth and prevent the disease from spreading to other parts of the body.
The research, led by Professor Maréne Landström at Umeå University in Sweden, offers new hope for patients with advanced forms of prostate cancer, one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among men worldwide.
The study’s findings have been published in the peer-reviewed journal Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy.
While many prostate cancer cases grow slowly and can be successfully managed, aggressive forms of the disease can spread rapidly beyond the prostate to the bones, lymph nodes, and other organs.
This process, known as metastasis, is responsible for the vast majority of prostate cancer-related deaths, making it a key focus of ongoing cancer research.
The newly developed treatment is specifically designed to interrupt the biological processes that enable cancer cells to grow, invade healthy tissue, and spread throughout the body.
Researchers created a fully human antibody that targets a critical pathway involved in the growth and spread of prostate cancer cells.
Because the antibody is made entirely from human proteins, scientists believe it may trigger fewer immune reactions than some existing antibody-based treatments.
Laboratory experiments demonstrated that the antibody significantly slowed the growth of aggressive prostate tumors while also preventing cancer cells from metastasizing to other parts of the body.
According to the research team, the treatment works differently from conventional therapies, raising hopes that it could also reduce the risk of serious side effects.
Collaboration Across Multiple Institutions
The project was carried out through a collaboration between several Swedish research and biotechnology organizations, including:

Researchers say the partnership combined expertise in cancer biology, drug development, and biotechnology to accelerate the discovery of the experimental treatment.

The experimental antibody must undergo extensive safety evaluations, followed by multiple phases of clinical trials in humans before it can be considered for regulatory approval and widespread medical use.
Researchers are also investigating whether the same therapeutic approach could be effective against other types of solid tumors, potentially expanding its use beyond prostate cancer.
If future clinical trials confirm the early laboratory results, the new antibody could transform the treatment of aggressive prostate cancer by focusing not only on shrinking tumors but also on preventing the disease from spreading.
Experts say stopping metastasis remains one of the greatest challenges in cancer care, and therapies capable of blocking this process could significantly improve survival rates and quality of life for patients diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.
While further research is needed, the study represents an important step toward developing more targeted, effective, and potentially safer treatments for one of the world’s most common cancers affecting men.
