Cupertino, California: Apple is reportedly preparing the most significant upgrade to the iPad Air in years, with industry reports suggesting the tablet will receive a completely refreshed design and an OLED display when the next-generation model arrives in early 2027.
According to MacRumors, the iPad Air has maintained the same exterior design since the launch of the fourth-generation model in 2020, making it the longest-running design in Apple’s current iPad lineup.
The 2020 redesign introduced flat edges, slimmer bezels, a full-screen display, and Touch ID integrated into the power button. Since then, Apple has updated the tablet with newer processors—including the M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips—while leaving its overall design unchanged.
OLED Display Expected to Debut
The biggest anticipated upgrade is the introduction of an OLED display, a technology expected to deliver richer colors, deeper blacks, improved contrast, and better power efficiency than current LCD panels.
Reports indicate that Samsung Display will supply single-stack LTPS OLED panels for the new iPad Air. While these displays are expected to be less bright and less expensive than the tandem OLED panels used in the latest iPad Pro, they would still represent a major visual improvement.
Powered by Apple’s M5 Chip
The upcoming tablet is also rumored to feature Apple’s next-generation M5 processor, offering faster performance, improved graphics capabilities, and enhanced AI processing for demanding applications and multitasking.
Part of Apple’s Broader OLED Strategy
The move to OLED is believed to be part of Apple’s long-term strategy to expand the technology across more of its product lineup, including future versions of the MacBook Air and iMac.
Apple previously introduced a major redesign alongside the OLED-equipped iPad Pro in 2024, reducing the tablet’s thickness while improving display quality, leading many analysts to expect a similar approach for the iPad Air.
iPad mini Could Offer a Preview
Another device expected to showcase Apple’s future tablet design is the rumored iPad mini 8, which could launch as early as October.
According to reports, the new compact tablet may feature a redesigned chassis, an OLED display, a vibration-based speaker system that eliminates traditional speaker openings, and a water-resistant design—features that would mark several firsts for Apple’s iPad lineup.
The iPad Air and iPad mini have shared a similar design language for several years. After adopting the iPad Air’s flat-edge design in 2021, the iPad mini has largely retained the same appearance.
If Apple introduces a redesigned iPad mini this year, industry observers believe the next-generation iPad Air could follow with a similar design philosophy in 2027, continuing the company’s tradition of aligning the aesthetics of its tablet family while introducing new display technologies and improved performance.
